  • How to make heavy smoke?

    Hi.

Got hold of Phoenix a couple of days ago, because I need to make some heavy smoke (like smoke from dry ice) in a project. I have checked out the sample-scenes that comes with Phoenix, but I have no clue how to make that kind of smoke.

Heavy Smoke 1 from ChaosGroups webpage looks a lot like the result I am looking for:
    http://www.chaosgroup.com/en/2/phoenixvideos.html

Does anybody know if there is a tutorial that shows how to make this kind of smoke or can give some kind of hint?

    Regards

    Rasmus, Denmark.

    Hi

I did that sim during beta period. I could send the max file to you later today when I go to office.

But basically the idea is to set your smoke temperature low enough. I think it was 50 or so in that scene. That way it reacts like cold/heavy smoke.
You could also additionally play with gravity - making it unnaturally strong or also giving a bit minus buoyancy.

i should say that the negative buoyancy given by the smoke and by low temperature have slightly different behavior. the smoke's buoyancy affects only the forces applied to the fluid, however the temperature affects not only the buoyancy, but the density as well.

Hi LarsSon - and and thanks for your kind reply.

If you could mail me the max-scene, I would be very greatfull. There are a lot of new parameters the learn, and this way I can narrow down problems and set up Phoenix in my project My email: rasmus@phiro.dk

Any chances ChaosGroup arranges a course in Phoenix somewhere?

        Regards

yeah, I know. Phoenix needs a lot of testing to understand what kind of effect different parameters gives to you.
Most of the time in my tests goes for playing with transparency curves -> to get wanted look/shading. simulation is the easiest part.

Heh, thanks Ivo for clarification. I didn't knew that it works with forces only.

              Max scene attached.

Setting in that file are really heavy. Grid contains over 80 million cells, so I'd suggest
to decrease the grid before trying any tests.

Also you need to change output and input paths.

              Cheers,

                    Simulation time 10h
Rendering time to 1080p was 3-10min per frame

                    Not bad?
