    I'm trying to create clouds that have a specific volume.
    Secondly I'd like to animate these clouds based on a deforming geometry.

    I have made some test and I can generate clouds by first filling the filling a geometry with particles but.
    Is there a way to get a cumulus feel without loosing the shape?
    How can I animate the cloud without it simulating all over the place

    I think I'm not solving thins the practical way.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    except the cumulus part, i'm not sure that you need simulation.
    you can just animate the geometry and use the distance texture modulated with cellular or noise.
    the cumulus you can animate similar to the mushrom cloud included in the samples. of course you have to change the settings, i suggest to remove the initial blast and to let only the temperature to drive the smoke.

      ha ha. Well that was a workaround I didn't think of. Not even sure I understand how it works. But I'll play around with it and ask more if I need to.

          Ooops, basically it was done here.
