  • Zebra lines effect causing problems

First off, the new version is a huge step forward -- nice work! Blending RGB now is a breeze. The only issue I'm running into is a zebra like effect that the grid is causing. I have adaptive grid on in this sim, so you can see it moving horizontally (mostly in the shadow area bottom left), but it happens without the adaptive grid. Do you have any recommendations on how to reduce/remove this issue? It's too apparent right now for our production.

    Thanks!

looks like lighting effect, i think it's not related to the adaptive grid. can you send us the scene and a single cache file ?

Hello, we had a look at your scene and it's the dome light that's causing this - you need to increase the dome light subdivisions. When interacting with phoenix, the dome light does not produce more or less noise, but instead - more or less linear artifacts.

Edit: To compensate for the speed loss, you can increase the step size % under the Rendering rollout.

That seems to have done the trick, thank you. Would you have any recommendations for getting a sharper render? I understand smoke is inherently blurry, but it all just looks out of focus.

Hmm, what are your render settings for this effect? Can you share shots of the lights' properties and phoenix's colors and transparency options?

Here is the smoke settings. I have two lights, a low lit dome and a very bright sphere light. Both lights have default settings.

I'm going to have to ask you for a scene file again - using these settings with the scene you sent previously, the render seems fine to me and unlike your video doesn't have these dark separated areas. In general, in order to squeeze more detail from a smoke render, you may try a custom transparency curve with sharp spikes - this will make it look either like cigarette smoke or will generally add string-like structures.
