  • restoring a fluid sim

I have a very long sim of 1500 frames and wanted to extend the sim a further 300 frames. After using restore the fluid flattened out and lost all inertial velocity giving totally different behaviour to the previous frames.

Is there some thing that needs to be stored in the output for this to work properly?

That's all, just setting the backup interval to something other than 0 should be enough. Since you were able to do a restore, everything seems to have been in place, so it sounds like a bug. I can restore properly with a simple simulation both with the official 2.2 build for max, and with the latest nightly build.

Is it possible to send the scene for investigation? In case it's confidential and can't be stripped of anything delicate, you may send it to support@chaosgroup.com instead of posting it here.

no need to export anything, by default one in 15 frames is backup frame, and there is no problem to restore the simulation. if there are no backup frames the restore option will refuse to proceed showing the corresponding message. your simulation sounds unusual, apparently you have backup frame but the behavior is changed. can you tell us more details, the phoenix version and if is possible find the log file (c:\phoenixfd\phoenix_maxverX.log) and attach it here

backup interval is 10, simulating the whole thing again gave me exactly what I was after, would be nice to be able to append though.

Alrighty, turns out it's a problem with the Slow-Moving advection in your scene. Won't happen if you restore after simulating with any other type of advection. Again - thanks for reporting, we will get it fixed in the nightly builds

Okay, the fix is in. Our nightly builds are currently down for maintenance, but when they come back, you'll be able to check get one and try it if you like
