  • Liquid simulation problem with foam.

    Hi!

I'm tryin out the latest nightly build, but if I turn on foam simulation for my ocean, the simulation locks up on the first frame when a foam should appear, slowly it use up all memory and then crashes.

Any idea what could be wrong?

    The scene:
    ocean_test.zip

If I hit start on simulate, it locks up on frame 10.

    Specs: Windows 7 64 bit
    3DSMax 2016 64bit
    phoenixFD_adv_22501_max2016_vray_30_x64_26686

    Regards

Turn the multiplyers to a bare minimum just to get a stabile run. It may simply be that at frame 10 you produce waaay to many particles for your system to handle.
Once you've got a stabile run, and can see the amount of particles being produced, then start to finetune your settings upwards. Never start with a high number. I only do that for final sims, as you really dont need tens of millions of particles to understand its motion.

That is what I was trying to do, but I couldn't get low enough numbers to produce foam, so I don't think that the problem is caused by excessive amount of particles. The simulator has 66000 cells and the birth rate for foam is 0,001. Units are in mm.
      Can't get lower than that.

Hmm okay, I could get some foam now and it starts immediately with 5mil foam particles, so you were right. I don't understand why so many particles though.

Seems to be a dodgy scene. Your liquid vanishes after the first frame and all hell breaks lose :P Shall have a bit of a play with it.. you are in milimeters too but I doubt it would cause that to happen.

Works fine when I brought your hull into a new scene and scaled to fit CM units. Generally best to keep phoenix scenes at CM units

On a side note to the chaos guys the export liquid particles are not showing each frame, only at the interval save (always prefer to view particles than the sprite thing)

Max 2016 todays nightly (15th March)

I made a new scene with meters as system units, seems to be working ok now. Thanks for the help!

                  Hi guys,

The important thing is not how you view the units - the container size must be as big as the real world thing - you can check the size in the Simulation panel.

@flipbook Affirmative, looks like the liquid particles are not exported no matter if you enable that in the Output panel or not - will check that, thanks for the tip!

the foam birth is based in the liquid velocity, in mm scale the velocity is very high and more particles are born with the same birth rate.

@flipbook: The export issue will be fixed in tomorrow's (16 March) nightly
