  • Camera Distance Affects Foam?

    So I rendered a few frames from one of the ship examples that was posted and ran the sim and tried zooming the camera in close to the ship but when the camera is far away the foam and such look great but as the camera gets closer it seems almost like the foam particles get smaller and start to disappear. Is there something I'm missing that I need to adjust or is this a bug or just the way things are?

    Looks like it is rendered in Point mode. Just like Krakatoa renders, the closer you get the more dense particles you need as it is just a point per particle Up close is usually best to use bubbles for foam I have found

    * Of course you could try the multiplier in the PHXfoam object

      as flipbook already said, apparently you are rendering in point mode. unlike the bubble/splash modes, point mode is not always showing proper density, the condition that must be satisfied is the particle size to be smaller than the pixel size. its visible that this condition is not satisfied below certain distance, you can improve the situation setting smaller particle size and bigger ior to compensate the density loss caused by the smaller size, but finally you will always have unnatural closeup view, because below certain distance the particles are separated and you see points, not bubbles.
      in few words, you have two solutions
      - use big enough particle count to have uniform appearance even in the closest view, and use particle size that is smaller that the pixel size, you can ensure this by a test render in splash mode
      - use bubble/splash mode, they are correct in all cases

        OK thanks Ill have to do some more reading. I have to produce a big animation involving some fluid simulations and have to have the camera zoom in and out without problems like the above. Ill check back if I can find info on what I need.

          in general the big difference in the zoom level is not easy to be handled, the contradiction is: if the particle density is big enough to satisfy the closeup view, the particle count in the whole simulator is too big and produces significant slow down.
          i think in got 6 they used phoenix in a scene that contained closeup and far views, and i'm not sure how they did it, but for sure it was not simple, i think they merged two sims, or something like that
