  • Resimulation of foam causes memory leak and crash in nightly 1608036879

    Heya Folks!

I'm doing some infinite ocean stuff at the minute with boat wakes so the phoenix ocean mesh makes lots of sense. I've done a quick liquid sim and then tried to do a resim with splashes and foam. The splashes are totally fine but don't generate a lot of rendered pixels (lots of particles but the splash shader seems to output very little) so I was thinking that foam must provide most of the white water. When I try to do this with my current nightly I get a memory flood which will evenetually kill my machine. I think this was the build from 20160803. Are there any known issues with foam?

It's a fairly small grid - 200 x 50 x 15 in terms of cell size and also in metres. I've tried small amounts in the foam birth settings - amount of 0.2 and vel thresh of 5.0m to try and keep count down in case it's a very memory intensive setting. It was mentioned elsewhere in the forums that some issues may have been introduced recently with splash or foam, is this the case and would I better off going back to an earlier nightly?

    Cheers!

    John

    Hello,

There seems to be something fishy in your scene. We'll investigate and get back to you.

Seems like your velocity threshold for the Foam is really low and your Foam amount is pretty large so this causes the edges of the simulator to spawn millions of particles. Try setting your Foam amount to 0.001 and the Vel. Threshold to 15 and you should be good to go.

I love it when it's me doing something stupid and nothing else

For this type of tank is there a possibility of some kind of mask so that the edges of a resimulation aren't able to spawn splash and foam particles? It'd be great to have it for the main fluid sim too so you could artificially flatten the edges of your sim to blend it back in with an infinite ocean.

Much appreciated for the help Georgi!

Not yet, unfortunately. It's it our to do list, though
