  • Restore is not working after crash

    Hi,

I'm having a problem with a sim for an explosion. every time Max crashes the Restore button starts the sim from the 1st frame even though I have the backup interval set to 5 and the aur files are saved in the folder till the frame of the crash. this happened to me twice so far. but when I hit the Stop button and the Restore it works as it suppose to but it doesn't after a crash which means if I had a crash after 6 hours of simulating it will re-sim from the start. is there a setting I need to change or is this a bug? I also wanted to ask if there are nightlies for 3.0 where you guys put all the fixes like 2.2?

    Thanks

    Ali

this is really interesting, because the saved frames can't be affected when already are finished, perhaps the restore search is affected by the broken frame, can reproduce the crash, open the folder with the cache files in details explorer mode, and attach a screenshot containing the last frames?

Hi Ivaylo. I just faced another issue with attaching the Image you asked for as there was no "OK" button to click after choosing the Image to attache so I had to send it in an email to support, can you please take a look there and let me know if this is what you need. And please let me know if you need anything else.

      Thanks

I forgot to mention that my start frame for the sim is set to 125 that's where the animation starts, I don't know if that affect anything but I thought I should mention it

          Hey,

Just wanted to check - do you scroll the timeline to where your simulation was before hitting Restore?

          Cheers!

Hi Ali, seeing your image, there are no backup files in the entire sequence, they are significantly larger and can be recognized easily.
If the scene produces the crash permanently, better send it to the support for investigation.

Hi Svetllin. I don't scroll to the crashed frame in the timeline cause I didn't have to do that before has that been changed?

Hi Ivaylo. The crash actually happens on the machine cause the PSU is not enough after I added another GPU with OC CPU that causes the machine to crash so I don't think it's the scene itself. but I'm interested in knowing why there is no backup file? do I have to do anything cause I remember that it used to work without anything done from my side.

once the current sim is done I'll try to create a simple scene and try to create a crash and see what happens.

              Thanks

Yes, if you could reproduce the crash it would be great! We definitely have to fix it.

Restoring the simulation works the following way - when you hit the Restore button, Phoenix takes the frame of the timeline you are at and starts going back until it finds a backup frame. So, by default you have backups at 0, 15, 30, 45, etc, and if you scroll the timeline to frame 40 and hit Restore, the simulation will continue from frame 30, because this is the last backup frame before the current frame on the timeline.

                Hope this helps, cheers!

Ok after some trial and error I found that when ever I add "Velocity" to the output channels the sim does not create a backup file the one Ivaylo was talking about which is larger than the rest of the files so if I did not have that channel as an output I can see the larger file being created. I'm using Thinking Particles as the source of my Fire/Smoke. I tested this with a new simple scene just to check what is going on wrong. I wanted to attach the file but I'm having some issues with the forum I will contact the support about it

well, i didn't see that you are creating an explosion, when smoke is simulated the restore frames are bigger only because they contain velocity, if you explicitly require to be exported, they have almost no extra information and therefore are not bigger than the normal frames. so, my conclusion that there are no restore frames was probably wrong

@Simple Freeze, please do not look at the file size. You can check for sure if a frame is a backup when you scroll the timeline to it and look at the Simulation panel - in the Cache File Content list you will see a text that says "* Backup Frame, can Restore From Here".
