  • Low detail displacement in distance

How do I avoid getting this low detail ocean displacement in the distance? I'm guessing it has something to do with the new "fade out factor", but I don't understand how it works in the current version. It used to be that you could fade displacement based on velocity so you can smooth out the waves in the wake, but now there is apparently a fade out away from ocean level as well? Do you have to use either/or, or can you have both, and how does the setting affect things? My settings is attached. What does the number 20 mean?

The displacement around my sim get very "soft" compared to the displacement in the simbox around my boat. I haven't figured out which settings I need to change. As you can see from one camera angle it is ok, but from the other it is not so good around the sim.

Pretty sure something is not working quite right with the displacement. It is very soft compared to a month ago So yea be cool to know if there is a new way to work with it.

I am testing with different settings but this only seems to affect the displacement in the sim, not on the infinite ocean plane around it. My ocean subdivs is currently 2.0 Is it to low? Has it changed recently? I'm Running 3.03.00 Build ID: 170302

It seems like I need much higher ocean subdivs compared to previously? When I pumped this up to four it looked a little better, but still a bit soft around the boat.

Btw, after reading the docs over again I think I understood the fade out away from ocean level better. I'm guessing water that has been pushed up or down from the ocean level are not affected by displacement, as well as water coming from sources running in to the ocean? Great!

Anyways, I haven't figured out a good setting for the oceanplane displacement. I tried cranking up the subdivs to 10, but that seems to be too much for my computer, even at 1280x720p. I'm running out of memory (32gb only on this workstation).

            Hello,

We did some changes for the ocean edges in the latest nightly builds. We have introduced Horizon Roughness - it controls the roughness of the distant ocean surface near the horizon. Adds more detail to the waves, which is especially helpful when using a highly reflective material for the ocean surface. Increasing this value can potentially produce visible noise when rendering an animation. To counter this effect you can increase the Ocean Subdivs parameter.

As for the displacement fadeout - Less displ. away from Ocean Level specifies the height above the ocean level that will be displaced as a percentage of the total height.

Increasing the ocean subdivs will consume more memory so be careful with that

Thanks, I guess I have to request nightlies access again, since I can only find Phoenix fd 2.0 builds and Vray for blender.
