  • Mesh?? eating all the system Ram.

    Hi,
I have what I think is a very simple scene (please see attached image) but its draining all my system RAM in some cases when I try to preview the mesh or render on some of the first frames like in the image which causes 3dsmax to crash sometimes.
Is this normal for such a simple scene?

    Thanks.

Well the scene is simple, but your grid is huge! Over one billion voxels is about 100 times more that I would use in that kind of scene.

Yes. I had to increase the grid resolution to get more detail because the lower res was not giving me the fine detail I was trying to get. But as you can see in the simulation parameters the required RAM is only 48G. And most of the time after its done previewing the particles or the mesh, the RAM goes back down to just around 20-30% but for some frames like the one in the screen capture it just stay at 99% RAM usage after its done previewing the particles or the mesh.

        Hey,

Please disregard the "Required RAM" label - the developer who wrote that missed a large part of the the memory usage of the liquid simulator, so I'm be hiding this label right now until this is implemented as it's misleading people.

The RAM usage you get really does correspond to the huge grid resolution, as Lasse said. However, can you please show a screenshot of how bug the grid is, because 1 Billion voxels for only 3 Million liquid particles means you have a huuuuuge volume of unused space in the simulator - this seems like the reason for your trouble and maybe adaptive grid or some other method can help you, depending on your setup.

        Cheers!

          Oh well,
My scene objects where too big. Seems I forgot to double check my scene object's scale.
I am running the sim again with the correct scale and its only using 25% of my system RAM with just about 500k particles. Will let it run and see if I need more particles for this shot.
Will post back if I run into any more issues.

          Thanks.
