    Usually we use border edge fade to hide any weird edge intersections when smoke/fire reaches the edge of the domain

    But this also effects the ground, ideally this should remain fully opaque since it's natural and intended to interact with the floor

    Maybe there's a way to do this already though?

    Hey, thanks for the suggestion! There is indeed a workaround - try adding a V-Ray Distance Texture to the Smoke Opacity rollout, using the Modulate checkbox. This way you would be able to place geometry that would make the opacity fade out nearby.
