  • Ocean Swells & breaking waves

    Hi Ivaylo,

Just a quick note to see if it's possible to use scripts with phoenix to create proper ocean swells that produce breaking waves when encountering shallow water??
If I understand corretly Phoenix is modeled on real world theromodynamics.....but it already does water simulation...is it using real-world hydrodynamics instead?? Sorry if my understanding is not so good.
Would be awesome to use phoenix to create realistic simulations of coastal process as well such as errosion & sand movement.

Below is a link to a java aplication that shows the physics & mathematical calculations of ocean swells & breaking waves.

    Solitary Wave Calculator

Not sure if any of this is possible but I would love to hear your thoughts as it appears all the equations are out there just waiting to be used.

    Kind regards

i would do a mix of a few modifies and a wave rig
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo_1-LEiovw
an old rig i built. im sure i could build a better one now

then again i guess pheonix can do this. i think i saw a test once where it worked

phoenix is able to simulate breaking waves, but the sand movement.... i think you have to use some general purpose particle simulator to do this.
i think someone did show here a breaking wave simulation made with phoenix, but i can't find it. perhaps you have seen this video, it is not exactly that you need, but shows a breaking wave. just try to prepare a proper geometry for the coast (it should be inclined), and to produce waves with a moving wall.

would faking the sand be an option or you want it exact to physics?

          Thanks Da Elf -
I had done a similar thing a few years ago but wanted to see what phoenix is capable of [Plus with phoenix I only need to set it up once & I could do all sorts of different waves just by changing the slop & shape of the ocean floor [Which is what happens in real-world waves.

          Ivaylo -
The wave breaking animation looks awesome!

What version is the latest??? that has the foam & bounces??? is it 1.20.00. Sorry I haven't kept up to date with things lately...too much work on at the moment.

I was thinking of setting it up like a wave pool like where you move a wall that creates a wave but I was wondering if a script would be heaps easier to set-up & much faster to calculate. So far I have found the water simulations very slow compared to the smoke & fire etc so I was looking for ways to speed up the wave creation part. Would scripting be possible for this???? you would also have more precise control over the wave shape with scripting.

          Thanks again for you time

--Don't worry about the sand & erosion guys....that was just a side idea as I am very interested in coastal engineering as well. I thought that particles would work better for that [so no phoenix]

this video was made with 2.0, it is still not on the market, but the release is in progress. it's true that liquids are simulated slower, but the script is not faster than the usual geometry interaction.

              Thanks Ivaylo.

I had a few goes at setting up a wave pool using geometry to move the water......not much success there as I had trouble making a decent wave [but that's prbably due to my lack of skills using phoenix]

I really think a script to create rolling swells would be a far better & simpler option???? Something like a simple body of water with a rolling line/s of velocity moving the the water. [This seems simple ?? or am I wrong.]

The trouble I had setting it up with Geometry was that the entire ocean would move when the wave was created. This seemed due to not having a large enough simulation area. It seems you would need a massive area to do it this way???

              Thanks Again for your time
