  • Restore simulation -> continue with increased resolution

Usually for basic fire and smoke simulations, I need to simulate a lot preroll frames to get the overall flow looking constant.
Like, if I have something burning, the first 300 frames are just preroll to get to the point where things starts to look good.
When doing really hires simulations, those first 300 frames might take 24 hours, so wasting quite a lot of time there.

It would be really nice to be able to create lowres sim for the beginning part and then continue simulation with higher resolution from some point. Currently it isn't possible and I understand why.
What would happen, if there was an option to resimulate the restore frame first to increase the grid resolution and then continue simulation with that higher resolution grid?

-Simulating frames from 0 to 300 - lowres (50 million)
-Restore the simulation from frame 300. - resimulate frame 300 to increase the resolution (to 400 million) -
-Continue simulation using that higher resolution frame as a restore frame.

Umm, I think with a latest nightly you can just hit Load & Start and the initial state cache will be stretched to the current resolution of your simulator

      REALLY!!?

I have to try it at once!

That is a life saving feature! It will save so much time.

At current project, it took just few hours to get to the point (frame 300) where I can then continue with the higher resolution grid, which is about 800 million voxels.

Woah, massive voxel count. Please share when possible
