  • V-Ray for Autodesk® Maya® public beta

Chaos Group is pleased to announce that the first public beta release of the V-Ray rendering engine for Autodesk® Maya® is now available for free download from the Chaos Group website: http://www.chaosgroup.com/support

This is the full implementation of the V-Ray engine inside Maya with the following limitations:

    * Output resolution is limited to 600x450
    * The number of lights in the scene is limited to 4.
    * The number of objects in the scene is limited to 200.
    * A watermark is placed at the upper-left corner of the image.

Render settings are practically identical in the Maya implementation compared to the 3dsmax. Additionally, V-Ray for Maya can export the scene to a format that allows rendering with the standalone version of V-Ray.

We invite everyone to take part in this public beta. Your input will help us shape the final product and will make sure that it is suited for your needs.

If you are not satisfied with the limitations and wish to have access to the internal unlimited builds, drop us an email at vraymaya@chaosgroup.com

Currently V-Ray is available for Maya 7.0 only. We will have the 6.5 and 8.0 builds ready in a few days.

    Best regards,
    V-Ray team
    Chaos Group
    Peter

wow, stunning! however I have few quesstions to ask:

does vray support texture map baking in maya?

what kind of displacement intergration does it have?

is there a full vray shader present?

is there suport for color mapping?

    Thanks!

      Excellent!

This is great news because the team was just discussing how to ensure the render pipeline integrates both 3ds Max and Maya.

Just a question.. will there be a "save V-ray settings" option so that migration from 3ds Max to Maya is easier? eg Autodesk® FBX® 3D authoring and interchange format compatibility etc.

      Thanks!

I imagine you would need to create a new login account for the support site to get access to the demos.

For certain reasons not everybody had DEMO access to our site, which prevented them to see the V-Ray for MAYA demo builds. Right now this has been fixed, so everybody now has DEMO rights so please logoff, login again and see if you can see the V-Ray for MAYA builds and download those.

Yes. We have the V-Ray core running on OSX, so we'll get to recompiling the Maya plugin too, but this will take some time.

                        Wow missed this one!!

That is fantastic news... you pretty much have all your bases covered vlado

I heard a rumor you will be able to run certain windows apps in leopard.. I dont see this as being possible because of the libraries and registry, but do you know anything about this?

OSX Leopard will have bootcamp built-in (bootcamp is currently a beta), which means that you can reboot into Windows (if you own a license of WinXP SP2).

You also could use Parallels to run a Windows virtual machine from OSX where Windows exists entirely within a single program on the OSX desktop. This is not a good solution for 3D accelerated programs like games and 3dsmax, and again you must have a legit copy of WinXP SP2.

You can use WINE to run some Windows apps on Linux (they now have an OSX build I believe), but 3dsmax doesn't run under it, and it's very very flaky in general. This does not require a license of Windows.
