  • Rendering Workflow in V-Ray for Archvis .

    Hello
I know there is many workflows that V-Ray need to support, but I would like to have the "option" to work the Lazy way I like .

    Tone mapping/post processing :
It is a deal-breaker for me as I would love to see the final result directly in 3D and the current built-in solutions doesn't give me what I want .
currently removing the "Burned" areas always affect the whole image and make it look so flat .. changing "Contrast" is so difficult as it is so sensitive now and the range is so big that you need to be very careful with it .. also contrast (to my eyes ) act different than what it does in PS/corona/Fstorm for example as I found the colors really change when I change it so I need to play with "saturation" controls which again not so user friendly and make thing over complicated imo .

    Interactive rendering :
stability and being sure that EVERYTHING I change update in VFB is a-must and that's not so good- yet- with V-Ray ..also how IPR render now make it "looks slow " as it starts from the center of the image and move toward the edges and pass one is"too clean " to my taste comparing to other renderers .

    Light-mixer :
Afaik it is coming to V-Ray soon but is is a god-send in my workflow so I'm mentioning it here just as reminder .

To make things clear ,I mainly work on Archviz rendering and I have been using VRay for so many years as it is fast, solid, and can render anything you though at it ! I enjoyed teaching it also over the years to hundred of students.. but for the last few months I've found myself moving more and more to Corona and I see it is the case for many Archviz artists I know too (Check sites like Behance/VWartclub to see what I mean ) it is not because it is faster nor better (none can beat VRay speed !) it is just "easier" to get the final look using the 3 points I've mentioned above .

    Kindest regards,
    Nawras,

    PS.sorry for my English .

Simply, I love to put pixels together! Sounds easy right : ))

Yes i can agree to this. We do use Vray exclusively, but what Nawras is saying it true in some points. We do extensive workflow of going tru all the stages, from linear 32 bit, to PS in 32 bit and then to magic bullet all the way until the end, so the way how vray is handling this is really the best one.

But sometimes you really just need fast outputs and be able to save directly preview from VFB and there are still options that are missing in order to make this simple enough. I myself mentioned this couple times, but the very main reason why many ppl see results from other engines as better out of the box, is cause they all have option to apply LUTs and output it like this. this is for example for me personally big disadvantage, as we are making out own Luts to see the result in VFB right away but i still cannot just output it right away. Idk if this changed in Next, but i don't see this in the feature list.
Have tried beta but only tested GPU capabilities.

Than yes, if you cannot save out LUT, you have to make the grading yourself and the curves are indeed not greatly controllable.

And this is one example from me what is making my work with Vray little less efficient on daily bases.

There are many more advantages ofc to the missing features, otherwise we would use something else, but these probably small fixes would make huge difference for the users.

    Anyhow, we do love Vray

Exactly. it is small things, but will definitely make big difference .

LUT workflow is something I really miss in VRay too, but I thought the VFB 2 will have something for it,No?

I think I will need to add some real examples and comparison to get some attention here
Will work on that the next week once I finish the projects in my hand .

Not have an opacity slider for lut's is also strange.

Yeah, I’m always surprised that these things don’t get rolled in sooner...Lightmix, material preview (didn’t see that in the beta...did it make it into final?), LUT opacity...they seem so much easier than the other big features that get rolled in and yet in a lot of ways they are more important for production. I love Optix denoising for example, but I’d trade it in a heartbeat for interactive Lightmix. Maybe the UI features are not enough of a challenge to the team
