this was just a test to see how a lot of geometry trees rendered vs. using hybrid based trees. i.e. Speedtree. Wasn't really paying attention to materials.
With speed tree, in one of our projects, 6000 trees comprise 30,000 polys but is so ram intensive that we peak/crash out at 2.8gigs of ram usage.
the nice thing with speed tree is how fast it renders. 6000 speedtrees renders in 2min on our dual opterons. My geometry tree test took 20min. that's a pretty big difference when considering and animation.
