  • Can't get displacement to work properly :?

    Hello.
I think I'm doing everything that needed like applying meshsmoth, subdivinding the geometry, disabling max displacement but always get some wierd distortions. Values aren't that high also..I think
Can someone take a look at this scene (it's just one object).
    I'm I missing something there?
    Here's a image also:

    Thanks

Well, for starters, looks like your "Max Subdivs" is quite low. I think default is 256. Looks like you may be around 32 or less.

another fun displacement tidbit is that it works MUCH nicer to do square-ish edges if you use a standard material with faceted checked..

        Thanks guys.
John, I don't think max subdivs would be the problem because in fact I have it in the maximum allowed, 512
Also the amount of displacement is only 0.1
I tried with other maps and of course if I lower the amount these strange distortions would decrease but the displacement would be very subtil.
If I give just a little more amount distortion and some gaps between faces occur again.
Maybe there are some global properties that I'm missing.
As for faceted material I'm going to try it this evening Dave.
Well..you have the scene so if you could give it a try would be great.
Maybe it is just some kind of "bad geometry".
        Thanks again.

I'll have to try that. I've been experimenting with basic siding, and couldn't get a sharp corner.

Do you mean to place the map in the displacement slot of the standard material? Or should I use std mat even if the displacement map is in the modifier?

            Its hard to explain..

lets just say that you're displacement map has sharp color changes from white to black or something similar without any gradual changes.

With your normal vraymtl, it will attempt to smooth across the object, sometimes introducing shading errors (You'd know them if you saw them..)

if you use a faceted material, your Displaced corners show up as 90degree angles.. without the fun you get when trying to smooth across a 90degree angle

Had some images that described it, but seem to have lost them in the shuffle to a new workstation.. oops. Hope it makes somewhat of sense
