  • Texture proxy system

Hello, just asking - is Vray able to support native 3dsmax texture proxy system? Sometimes with huge textures (16k jpegs) i need to faster viewport/scene IO operations. I'd like to create auto-proxies and turn them on off when required. I tried but I could go wrong about it. Is this possible?

Might not be exactly what you're after, but vray does have a way to proxy maps - you need to convert them to either tiled exr's or .tx files and load them using the vrayhdri loader. there's a script included with vray which handles automatic conversion to hdriloader & exr. it takes only what it needs and the appropriate resolution from the image file, so file loading is much quicker. memory use is significantly reduced.

.tx is way more efficient than exr, but a little more destructive as none of the texture / bitmap re-linking plugins recognise it as an image file... and they also cant be opened/edited in photoshop. very much a final render to save memory thing that. The memory saving/render speed difference it can make is astonishing however.

Thanks for answer. Yes, I tested tiled and non tiled exrs via vray hdri textures. It works great during rendertime, but 3dsmax viewports recognize these textures as full 16k uncompressed (like bmp or tiff) and slows down as hell. Also, what is interesting, I noticed that 3dsmax terribly slows down scene loading with 16k+ textures, regardless of geometry amount. Making them temporarily 2k makes scene loading very fast. Which is strange, because it is not asked for full texture resolution until render time. That's why fast possibility of switching 2k / 16k would be neat. Also, does the HDRI material converter tool retain bitmap output parameters like "invert" "Rgb shift" and "blur"?
