Vray RT production getting stuck on 'translating scene' stage

I'm trying to dabble in RT. I've switched to RT in production mode, switched the engine to CUDA (I have a P4000 Quadro) and hit interactive rendering from the frame buffer, but even the simplest scenes (literally one cube) are getting stuck a few seconds in to 'translating scene'

My card's driver is up to date. This is a brand new machine and it was the same behavior on my last one, so it must be something I'm doing.

All other settings have been left at default.

Any pointer appreciated.
