RGB 10 black & 180 white

    I'm not sure where everyone got the 180 value in the first place, or even the 220 one that is also commonly cited. 243 sRGB works out to an albedo of 0.9 as far as I can tell which is more or less the number I get when I look up white materials. 180 gets an albedo of roughly 0.5, which is cited as that of fresh concrete. Anybody actually know where these minimum and maximum values are coming from, and why they don't really seem to match measured total albedo values?

      Yea well, lets not talk again about whether one should or should not use min max values.. Everything about that has been said in the thread you just posted. I think the idea was to give new guys and people who came from a none physically based background (games 5 years in the past) an idea where the majority of albedos live.

        i think 180 is from Corona. sampling gets slower over that value so this is what they recommend.

          I typically use 180 for exterior whites and 200-240 for interior whites...Blacks I tweak by eye and what looks natural depending on conditions.

            All this talk of 10-180, 220, etc, etc just makes me question where you are all entering this value: are you just clicking the color swatch next to the diffuse parameter or are you entering it in a VRayColor Map with the gamma set to 2.2? I've been using the map technique a long time now and had pretty good success getting it to match rgb values from paint manufacturers, spot colors, etc. Just curious what everyone else does.

              I use the default built in swatch in the material. I don't have the time to do VrayColor map. I only use it if I have to match a color from a manufacturer.

                what do those numbers in the brackets mean?

                i tend to vary my levels in various 3D pieces.
                I generaly use 10/180 spread to start with, but i dont hesitate to widen this to 7/230 or do 20-30/230 and use some nice LUT to get back those blacks.
                There was a great topic about this on Corona forum. I will try to find it and post it here.

                  RGB 10 is the value in color swatch (3ds max). 59 would be the same value in gamma corrected texture (sRBG or roughly 2.2)
