  • Optimising scenes in Next

    Hi guys,

With Next, is there a tutorial / workflow to optimise scenes? Is Grant Warwicks still the way to go, even though it's outdated and relies on changing settings (ie material subdivs) that are otherwise normally not changed?

My problem is that my interior scenes seem to be taking an age to render, much more than expected, and to be honest, more that I'd have expected in Vray 3. I've re-built all my rendering files using Next, so I'm not bringing incorrect settings from vray 3.

Any links for advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dean

I think Grant's way is really outdated, but will probably still work. I just did a series of interiors and my render times were amazingly fast. Some of the spaces took 15 minutes, which were 2k images. You have to make sure your camera and light settings are true to real life.

This is definitely outdated. I haven't seen anyone get better render times with this approach lately.

More information will help. If you can get me a scene to vlado@chaosgroup.com I might be able to give you some pointers.

            Best regards,
            Vlado

lol Grant Warwicks methods only work if you have no deadlines and access to 140 machines with DR !
I have been restarting my 3.6 scenes in Next and have in some cases got cleaner images, faster mainly when using atmospherics and HDRI lighting

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this? Just a bit lost as to where to start optimising scenes in Next?

                    Cheers

I think V-Ray NEXT does it for you now. There really isn't much to do. I run a few scripts as a habit, but it's nothing V-Ray NEXT isn't doing in RT.

OK, so what's the optimal set-up? I render using buckets, CPU. Lighting is generally vray sun, direct lights, spot lights or vray plane lights. Hardly ever use HDRI.

I have 1/24 0.01 and everything else as standard.

I have no direct comparisons between vray 3 and next, but I get the feeling, especially on interiors, that my renders are taking too long for an acceptible level of noise.

Yes, interiors for me are a nightmare on render times, too, using CPU. I switched to GPU Hybrid to get around the high render times. With CPU my interiors were 2-3 hours. With GPU Hybrid, it's less than 1/2 an hour.

5k resolution, over 12 hours per interior.
