  • How to create openings in AEC Walls

    Hi All,

I've started playing AEC walls for one of my projects, I've been using the Doors and Windows that are included but im a bit limited with the panels to make a front door etc.
I wanted to put a different door in and tried to use Boolean to punch out a hole but the walls didnt like that at all so I was wondering if there is a better of doing this ?

    Thanks

    railcone with clipping splines

....can get tricky if you have walls angled not on X or Y
    Kind Regards,

Lol I don't think you've read the question right. And when using railclone you can just add the window and door to the definition.

I just tried the AEC wall thing with a regular Boolean operation (Subtracted it with a box) and it works perfectly fine.

For me it works fine but as soon as i add more than two boolean operands then it send all my walls crazy. Might be something I'm doing wrong but id hope it isnt

If I remember correctly and unless they updated it from when I last tried it in 1998, those AEC bits of Max are utterly crap and there's no point in using them.
If you are using the AEC walls then yes, they are really confusing unless you are building what I would call a 'Noddy house', that is, a very simple little box with one window in each wall.
The auto-boolean it uses is just not capable. Booleans were/are always dodgy in Max but generally it's better to not rely on something auto as it'll be a time-waster in the end, in my humble
That said, the update to ProBoolean is reasonable and will probably do most of what you need....fingers always tightly crossed and save before operations!

I've found that the 'new' regular boolean gives better results than the proboolean, weirdly enough. I wouldn't touch anything automatic like AEC in Max with a stick though either.

Boolean has tanked over the last few releases. Things that were easy are not a mess, so I poly model now. I spend more time on modeling a clean and organized model more than almost anything. I haven't used the AEC tools in years.
