Before they had to just catch up to each other, both weren't able to just explore what they wanted to explore but had to compete with each other - which meant taking the "faster", less risky approach if necessary. Now they can just both try more fringe ideas that may not lead anywhere ... but could potentially be the most awesome thing and exchange the technology if one of them is successful - or as vlado stated above, learn from it and try another spin on the idea.

Why do you use V-Ray and/or Corona?

This is a sticky topic.

And I think that is great, I just wish it could based on one core, so that all may potentially benefit. I see tremendous advantages in different approaches and gui based on market segment, but having two different products doing basically the same thing, competing with each other, from the same company just can't be in the best interest of either Chaos or its users.

Having one core that attempts to do everything that we need for both renderers would be extremely challenging and very complicated to develop and support. V-Ray has to deal with stuff like deep output, Cryptomattes, Alembic (and maybe soon USD and MaterialX) support, shading/geometry SDK (that needs to be relatively stable for long periods of time), direct OSL/GLSL/MDL support and other somewhat exotic features, not to mention GPU rendering; also V-Ray tends to have a longer development cycle with a long support period (we still have customers using V-Ray 3.x and we must be able to fix stuff for that old version in case there are issues). Corona has a somewhat different development philosophy with its own pros and cons. Trying to force the same code base on both renderers seems to me to carry a very high risk of failure.

About getting the caustics over from Corona to vray like they are right now, how long do you figure would it take?
it's probably not as easy at it sounds, right?Check out my tutorials, assets, free samples and weekly newsletter:

For me..we use both renders nowadays on half of projects:
Corona PROS
Lightmix - this is going to be caught up by vray by introduction of VFB 2 - its there right now as well but not as easy to use as in Corna
Caustics - new feature - simplicity of usage - Vrays implementation is aged and the result is somewhat tedious to finetune
Material preview - very predictable result
GI - cant get rid of the feeling the GI distribution is better in Corona - for me and our clients the difference is quite big, especially in complicated interiors.
Very good bump mapping
Denoiser - works much better and preserves details better
Corona CONS
Bad when it comes to setting some exclusions and condition in renders, materials, objects ..include this exclude that, etc - quite useless for complicated artistic tasks
AO map - very limited
Triplanar - very limited
DR - takes forever to start - i mean this is by far the worst con for us
CORONA FORUM
great and lively and helpful forum just as this one used to be!!!!
----------
VRAY - still our render of choice we will be sticking with
I can see Vray being a lot more beneficcial accross our pipeline within forseeable future...we use Corona mainly because our clients do as well.
Vray PROS
A lot faster
Loads of options for artistic freedom
Compatibility and scalability
Loads of material nodes
Vray CONS
Some important features for us are are taking long time to develop, probably due to a fact that Vray covers loads of apps and the dev is not so concentrated on Max anymore. Fair enough though. Happy to wait
Denoiser - unsure why but it kills more detail in textures than the on in Corona
Caustics - aged implementation - lets see what Update 2 brings
Generally VERY happy with the way Vray develops. Thanks!
VRAY FORUM
turning into a few mens show here - only few people share their stuff here - compared to Corona forum its almost as a joke ....
the common explanation we usually get here is that people share their stuff elsewhere...i dont think so...look at corona forum gallery....
Activity of Mr. Emanuelle Lecchi (hopefully spelled right, sorry if not))
is something i cant believe is allowed by Chaosgroups official. Insultions, laughing at people, ashaming....terrible....i have counts of proof in my PM and my email and social chats that i am not alone who thinks this.
The trouble stirrer - as he loves to call himself - is a reason i stopped posting more.....and so the people i am in contact with.
Since when it became "a mission"??? for Chaosgroup to make fun of and put clients to shame through this guys unwitty and totally unappropriate comments is beyond my understading.
I ve been told by one of my colleagues whos active on Corona Forum, that he starting doing similar stuff there.......dont know...i am just sad this happens...
Obviously Lele is very clever and his expertise is sometimes very valuable but the way he treats people is a disgrace to this forum.
Do you need a petition or a poll to do something about it at last ???

I for my self see Lele as a (little too) honest person which is sometimes a little hard to accept.
He says what he thinks. No matter if one likes it or not. For me, this is something I can enjoy, though I know some people are having trouble not to take it too personal.
And he is damn helpful! Without him I wouldn't know half of what I know about the inner works of Vray. Other officials answer waay less precise than him.
That's been said, I think this thread should stay at technical differences between corona and vray. Maybe you should start a dedicated Lele bashing thread.German guy, sorry for my English.

I agree with all what PixelBox said. Corona has some better things like GI (or lighting). Dont know why but looks more pleasant for the eyes in some cases. Other thing is better texture AA, bump mapping and I think in latest version better displacement. And one more thing - much faster implementation of features. Corona after few months released new adaptive sampling, after that new fog, support for PhoenixFD and other volumetrics, now its new caustics. And VRay? We still looking forward for adaptive dome in nonbeta stage and lightmix for how long, 4 years? But so many years for one feature is really terrible. And I dont mention a bug with bump VRay has for 10 years maybe.
On other hand VRay has so many options we are used to, this is why we love VRay. But slow implementation of features ruining great feeling around VRay. And dont understand me wrong, some features are great, I am really looking forward for SP2 now.
And VRay forum? Its not like its used to. LeLe making fools from everybody insted of helping. Vlado helps, but cant helping whole forum on his own. And I had more problems in CPU and GPU and after first reply, thread was gone forever. Now its even impossible to find them on forum.
And one more thing - UVW randomizer map can be very helpfull, corona has it. I was hoping VRay add this too. I know there are plenty of scripts, but they are really terrible when you tried to use them in workflow in daily basis.Last edited by Jiri.Matys; 03-06-2019, 08:02 AM.AMD TR 7980X, 256GB DDR5, GeForce RTX 4090 24GB, Win 10 Pro

Thanks for the comments so far! I would only like to point out that the GI distribution in V-Ray and Corona is exactly the same. If you have examples of the opposite, I would be very interested to see them

I thank you for spotting my attempts at straightness, and i understand i can be (or perceived as, which is tantamount to the same thing.) abrasive at times, but beyond that, it's really not an occupation of mine to give a hard time to anyone.
Back on topic now, please!Lele
