  • Rendering Select Materials as Fully Diffuse/Self-Illuminated?

I'm working on a shot that is mostly camera projected textures. I've been using the diffuse filter pass for these elements so that the gamma and brightness is 100% accurate to the source material, however it would be nice to be able to view it this way in my beauty pass.

Obviously setting self-illumination would be the approach in the max scanline renderer, but Vray treats self-illuminated materials photo-realistically which makes matching the rendered gamma and brightness to the source difficult. Is it possible to achieve "3dsmax scanline self-illumination" somehow in vray?

Also, I've fiddled with the adjust camera exposure tickbox but it doesn't seem to achieve what I'm asking about.

      Hi,

You can achieve that by disabling the lights checkbox in the Global switches rollout. Also you have to add the same color, or map to the self-illumination slot of the VRayMtl.

Is there a way to achieve it without disabling lights? I was hoping to be able to mix the self-illuminated objects within a lit scene. I guess I can just utilize the diffuse pass and a matte element pass.

When you apply a self-illumination VRayMtl (set diffuse to black), or VRayLight Mtl to all the objects and you don't have any materials that are not emitting light, you could not disable lights and you should get the same result. If this is not your case, could you send us an example scene to support@chaosgroup.com, so we can reproduce your issue. If you can include a scanline scene also, it will help.
