Often, I have fireplaces in my interiors. Is Phoenix the answer or is it overkill? I have been using images with V-Ray light material, which works fine, but I want to do better.

If it's just a living room stove, the best thing is what you're doing, with an image with alpha in a VRay Light. You could also generate the effect of fire in After Effect as a postproduction, see the following video.
