  • Vray options...

This is a general question as I'm looking into 3D platform options for getting back into Vray after a LONG time without actually doing any Architectural 3D work with vray.

I've previously used Vray for 3DSmax in the past for a previous employer where we had permanent licences for both Vray and 3DSMax (ie not my licence and no longer available to me) - seems like it was much cheaper back then because now 3DMax will cost over $2000 a year and there are no permanent licences available - I REALLY hate this annual model for payment!!!.

My question which isn't that relevant to this forum is to ask what other options non-Autodesk are viable? I've downloaded the Rhino trial and will be giving that a good test with the vray plugin. All of the other valid major options suitable for architectural 3D seems to be for Autodesk products (which i'd like to avoid due to cost). I am worried though when I look through the Rhino section of the vray forum and almost nobody is using Rhino for renderings compared to 3DSmax - are there some major flaws with this alternative?

My typical workflow at the moment is modelling in ArchiCAD, just doing basic wireframes to combine with the 2D drawings but I would like to add some vray rendering capability to this. When I used to use 3DSmax I would use very little of the features - it would basically be a rendering platform with the vray plugin, so it seems like a complete waste of money to spend big on features that will not be used. I will not be much or any 3D modelling in Rhino except for importing some 3D objects.

This would primarily be rendered Architectural images (both interior and exterior), not animations. The quality of images from vray in 3DSmax has always been excellent and the new features seem worth trying, but I am wondering if I will be able to produce the same results with Rhino+vray?. The quality is the primary factor as my current employer will not make this decision unless i can match/improve on prevous work done with max+vray. Either way I will be trying Rhino out and trying to make it work as their cost is $1000 for a permanent licence along with the cost of a new vray licence (either way they will be purchasing a vray licence).

Will there be a Vray plugin for ArchiCAD soon? (similar to the Revit one.). That could solve all of my problems as id rather not use a second 3D program just for rendering as ArchiCAD is already very expensive. I will wait if there is one in development.

Any help/advice on this is much appreciated. For now though I have a month to play with the Rhino plugin and 90 days to learn Rhino.

    regards, Paul

    Hi Paul,

Another option for Archvis is Modo+Vray, Vray for Modo is one of the best Vray plugins and Modo itself is very affordable and the community is pretty awesome!
There is a skype chat for Modo/Vray users, you will find many people who do archvis there if you have questions about the workflow, let me know if you would want to join

    Best,

good video. I like the presentation and reasons why combining Modo and vray makes sense - good value and quite stable. My main problem at the moment is that while its a good modelling package, I wont be using much of that. Basically I just need a means of importing, manipulating a few things and then setting up lights/materials to render since all of my modelling is done in ArchiCAD.I need something that is similar to max to reduce how long it takes to re-learn everything. I saw the price for MODO is about $1600 compared to $1000 for Rhino - not a big deal but its still an influencing factor.

Rhino seems quite good after some playing around with the trial and vray plugin. The interface is massively different though so this is a steep learning curve, even just to find out how to save camera views etc took me a long time to figure out. After some testing, I had crashed twice with hangs on the interactive rendering window. I'm not sure now to be honest. Every option has its positives and negatives; modo will probably be the same. I remember having a lot of crashes with max in the past anyway so I guess this is the norm. It's a tough decision!

Thanks for the help. Just a little update - we just went with max 2020 and the latest vray as my boss decided it was too time consuming to re-learn in other software. probably a good move as there are enough changes to keep on top of as it is since I last used vray. Very steep learning curve and my old materials from 10+ years ago no longer work.

Nicinus - good link, thanks for sharing. I'll have a good look at this option for my own freelance work.

Paul, if you shared with us a sample of such shaders, we'd maybe able to tell you how to fix them.
Notice that if you ran a v-ray scene conversion script on those old assets, it may already fix some of the issues.
Seeing what they are specifically, however, would likely be better.
