  • Vray Physical Camera - missing attributes / features, which were shown in tutorial

    Hello,

I have Max2020 and VrayNext and I'm new to 3dsMax (coming from Maya).

I was following a tutorial and created a VRayPhysicalCamera.

But at least one importat attribute for adjustment is missing (maybe even more)
and Depth of Field behaves unexpected.

    - I have no INSTALL EXPOSURE CONTROL button, which enables EV-lock

    - Depth of field: When I enable DOF and set the focus distance very close (like 5cm instead 200cm), then it zoomes the complete picture.
In Maya changes of the Vray focus distance haven't any effect on the focal length or image crop.
This makes it impossible to set focus to a very closed object without loosing camera view adjustements.

    - In the tutorial I can see clearly a PREVIEW OF DOF in the Viewport (without any need of Vray IPR).
I did not find the viewport setting in 3dsMax until now. Please help

    Many thanks

    Hello,

Most probably the tutorial you are describing uses the Physical Camera in 3ds Max and not the VRayPhysicalCamera.

      Hi Yavor,
thanks, it‘s definitely a vray physical there, but an older 3dsMax.

Most important to me is the second question, which has not to do with that tutorial:
My own vray physical camera starts to zoom when I adjust focus distance. This can‘t be the expected behaviour...
      Any idea for that?

        Hi,

The zoom and focus distance thing seems to be like the one described here:
        https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...dFocusDistance
If that is not the case - can you share some screenshots/renders of the problem ?

As for the tutorial - it might be from some older version of V-Ray - there even the button in our toolbar created the Max's Physical Camera instead of the VRayPhysicalCamera. At some point we decided to bring back our camera. If you could share the video I can say for sure.

        Best regards,

I have made an own fresh scene, and focussing on very close foreground still scales the picture.
This is very similar to the behaviour of real world lenses but not useful in compositing.
Zoom factor hasn't influence on that behaviour. So either it is the way it is implemented in Max or there must be another hidden button somewhere...
          Thanks

With the VRayPhysicalCamera - you can lock the field of view to a fixed value:

Name:	camera.png
Views:	1398
Size:	4.2 KB
ID:	1051972

Then changing the focus distance even to very low values won't cause zoom changes.

Great, thanks, that was the button
I thought it's just if you choose between mm or angle
