  • Possible to Split a Render?

    Hello,

I have an image request that requires a very high resolution. In my process I do some color correction in After Effects, which won't load an exr file over roughly 9000 pixels. I have tried splitting the final rendered exr image in Photoshop into 4 images, then processing them in AE, then sewing them back together in PS. PS is not well suited for this and leaves a seam everywhere. What I'd like to do is to split the final image into 4 at render time, then process those 4 in AE, then sew the final ones back together in Photoshop, or another way. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tackle this?

    thx

Have you tried https://topazlabs.com/gigapixel-ai/ - Render 1/2 resolution and upscale it.

AE supports up to 30000 pixels...is that not large enough?
Loading that needs more ram to be available to AE in order to do it, so you could try changing that in prefs.

No apparently. Whenever I import the file into AE I get this error and it crashes. From what I've read on the Adobe site, AE limits 2GB of memory per frame. This is a 32bit exr file... seems like 2GB would be enough but I guess not. AE crashes after this error.

That's annoying and I'm sorry my suggestion didn't help.
I'll try to have a look over the weekend and see if I can figure it out, unless anyone else gets there first

As a test, have you tried to load the same image but in various other formats other than the exr?
If not then I'd suggest that, to eliminate the possible fact that it's the exr that is the issue itself.

EDIT: This morning my test suggests this is not going to be possible with an exr of that size. A bit disappointing but such is life
I'd go with Glorybound's suggestion of Gigapixel.
I'm unsure why you'd get seams in P'shop but you can always solve that by having each quadrant overlapping and blending the seams, no?

Thank you for checking. I'll try the Photoshop approach again. I discovered that the seams were coming from improper snapping... it seams PS can't handle snapping large images either. And it also has the 2GB file limit.

Does saving as a PSB not solve that? I don't work with such large files normally so unsure - but it seems to be the suggested solution.

You could also try Natron, which while not perfect (i.e. it's no Nuke.), should be able to deal with very high resolutions, and tons of RAM.
It's free, and there's no time pressure on learning it, but it would surely be a valuable asset to do some specific things in post (while, f.e., staying as EXR at the right bit depth throughout.).

Interesting and worth checking out, if all specifically else fails
