  • Real tricky texture issue?

I was wondering of anyone knew a way to realistically create an effect as per the grab show?
It's a product that I need to render and it has a fancy black surface that reflects light in a kind of rainbow effect depending upon the angle one views if from?

This looks like thin film interference. There's a texture in VRay that does it based on physical values, in Maya it's hidden under the Create From V-Ray plugin menu, not sure where you can find it in 3Ds Max. It's hard to control though. The easier and more artist friendly method is to create a rainbow colored gradient ramp and use a falloff or fresnel map as the source map. The falloff/fresnel makes it change color depending on the angle.

Many Thanks dgruwler - I had found the OSL - thin film shader on the Chaos Group site (https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...in+Film+Shader) and tried it - but it certainly did not give me the results I was after and was a pig to use!
