  • Object matte comping problem

Before you say anything, yes i have my object matte alpha to -1

Ok im trying to comp this scene together. I posted earlier about transparencies and was told the best way to make the woman in my film transparent is to do it in post. Basically, the pair of hands on the left (womans) need to be at around 80% (and the shadows that she casts too). So ive made three layers...a base layer, a woman layer and a shadows layer. Im having problems with just the shadows layer, everything else is fine. For the shadows layer ive made everything except the woman a matte -1 object that has Shadows and Affect Alpha ticked. These objects dont cast shadows either. Ive made the woman not visible to camera. Here's my problem and a breakdown of the layers

You can see that the problem is in the shadow map, where it looks like the man's right hand is casting a shadow (even tho in the properties box it's set to NOT cast any). Im not sure whats going on here, cant get my head around it. Hopefully someone here can help me, i really need to get this sorted so i can continue rendering. Thanks guys

How did you generate the shadow pass?

      Best regards,

For the shadows layer i've made everything except the woman (on left) a matte -1 object that has Shadows and Affect Alpha ticked (under the direct light subsection of Matte object property). These objects are not casting shadows. the woman is not visible to camera but does cast shadows.

I dont get why the man's hand is casting shadows in the shadow pass, after telling it not to. Vlad ill send you the file if needs be

I think you will have to create a simple scene and reproduce the error so we can have a look ..

man I hate it when people do this. Its a major pet peeve of mine. What do you think we all have the answer and are just choosing not to share?

Ok ive set up a simple scene to illustrate the problem. The purple cylinders are represent the woman's arms and legs, the box is the piano and the other cylinders are the man's arms and legs.

This little bit of shadow that isnt being affected by woman's hand is (i think) what's causing all the problems in the main scene. Here's an archive of the simple scene, hope you can help
