  • 1.5k Trees ...

    Hi all.

I need to produce an animation, and ariel views for a large landscaping project with approximately 1500 trees.

I was thinking of using Bionatics EASYnat, with the Hybrid setting... I estimate the total scene would be +10M polys though. Would this work ok and render in Vray, or is there another suggested method?

    Any input is much appreciated.

can you split the trees into passes, rather than rendering it in one scene. would be more managable? Just a thought.

you could create vray Proxies from the trees ... then you should be able to render without any problems..

        The proxy idea was interesting.

But I tested it with 1 (Bionatics) tree, and for some unknown reason it took ages to render. Though a Teapot or a Torus Knot was very fast.

        Any thoughts on that?

estimate how far you are likely to get from the trees. if you're staying up in the wild blue yonder, you can most likely go with particle tree object instances.

(We've got a similar rig with an instanced very very low poly tree, with a displacement on the canopy)

Also remember that geometry is *MUCH* faster than overlapped opacity maps, so the proxy idea with a minimum of leaves to fill works fairly smooth

well i think what ever you do, trees with that amount of data will take a while to render ... ive just done a test with around 7 million and it rendered in 4 mins .. but it was a basic chair model..

I changed my proxy from overlapping planes to geometry, and it's nice and quick now.

Thanks everybody for the help. Probably will go with Proxies now.

There will be a huge difference in the time to render when opasity is involved like tree leaves. With the AEC trees I noticed a big difference when just witting the leaves with a colour comapred to rendering with a leaf map applied with an opasity map.
