  • VRay 5 animation render time optimization

I am trying to render an interior animation using VRay 5 GPU, 3DS Max 2019 (brute force and LC) using the default animation settings in LC calculations.

Should I save the precalculated LC as a file as we did previously to save time? What would be advisable?

Using the animation preset of the light cache is enough. Please do not precalculate the light cache, this is not needed anymore.

What are the pro's and con's of precalculating the LC? We were just starting to do some animation tests and were using the pre calculate method. Just seemed an easy way to save time as the LC takes a moment per frame with the bigger files.

According to Vlado pre-caching the LC could possibly (and likely) interfere with Adaptive Lights and the new Adaptive Dome light.

Like anything, I would do a few quick tests to verify what is fastest for YOUR scene on YOUR hardware. Generalizations are just that. Not sure how adaptive one can be if your scene only has a couple spot lights, for instance.

Agreed about the quick tests. I have found many of my scenes (product illustration/animation) render faster via BruteForce/BruteForce than with BruteForce/LightCache. And with less flickering trouble.
Current workstation Dell 5820 with nVidia Quadro RTX 4000, 32 GB RAM, Win 10pro-64.
          3D software: Max 2022 (since 3d Studio), V-Ray 6, Phoenix 5, TyFlow, Deadline 10.1.

That is sometimes the case, indeed. Always have to test things if you need to worry about render times like for a long animation.
