  • Bad reflections .... please help

Hello ... I'm having problems with some glossy reflections ... there's always some dark spot on the surface ... I just can't get rid of it ... might have something to do with the reflection panels that are in the scene ... here's the image to illustrate the problem.

    And here's the max (7) scene ...

If somebody could help me ... that would be great ...

    Regards ... Andreas.

The first thing would be to switch to "Density-based" look-up mode for the irradiance map, and the second - turn off generate/receive GI for the light halo object. It would be best to get rid of that object altogether and use an omni light which affects only the specular color instead.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

your problem is not in reflection. It is using interpolated glossy and low gi settings on irradience map. Try turning off interpolate glossy and switching to quasi montecarlo. You will see that the image renders fine. The spots that appear on your ball also appear on the plane around it which means its a gi/sample related issue.
Or you can try increasing the number of interpolated samples from 20 to 50-70, put irradience map at high preset settings...

Hello ... I've tried all your suggestions ... nothing worked ... finally I found out that the problem lies in the reflection itself ... depending on the intensity of the reflection the light panels appear and disappear ... here are some samples with different degrees of reflection (grey value) as well as some falloff map samples with their grey values as well ...

As you can see, at a grey value of 16 the reflection is still here ... at value 12 the reflection is gone and at value 8 it's even darker than the lightdome that surrounds it all ... very strange ...

Here's the max file to play around with ...

Maybe somebody can explain that thing to me ...

          Regards ... Andreas.

I think you can solve this by reducing the cutoff threshold in the VRay material.

Thanks Vlado ... now it seems to work ... I'm wondering why I've never had to use that spinner before ... so far things always worked fine without adjusting it ... why would someone want to eliminate reflections like that ... I don't know ....

Thanks anyway ... problem solved ... I appreciate the fast support you give ...

              Regards ... Andreas.
