  • Vray proxy object materials?

    Hi,

I don't understand how to get the materials I have on an object I convert to a Vray Proxy Object to be imported with the proxy object? Is this possible or does the proxy object have to come from the scene I am currently working on; thus having to merge the max files into the scene I'm working on and then convert the object(s) into Vray Proxy Object(s)?

    Thanks,

The .vrmesh file does not contain any material descriptions; you must apply a material to the VRayProxy object in the 3dsmax scene. So, if you want to use a proxy from one scene into another, you will have to import the material separately.

      Hi Vlado,

Does that mean that I need to create a multi-subobject material in the scene I am working on so I can use the object in another scene as a Vray Proxy Object and then save the material, convert the object to a Vray Proxy Object and then import the Proxy object into the other scene and apply the multi-subobject material I saved to the proxy object.

Is this the correct work flow for objects that are made-up of many different pieces with different materials applied to the different parts?

I am trying to get 100 cars into a Car lot rendering I am doing for a client and the cars are going to make-up a huge amount of geometry. So I want to know how to use the Vray Proxy Object as this seems like a perfect use for it.

Would instances work as well as the Vray Proxy Object for the car models?

      Thanks,

Since having too many objects slows down the scene you could generate a submaterial for the cars and collapse some cars to one object. Then export to vrayproxy. Then instance this cargroup to fill your lot. This way you can benefit both from the instances and the vrayproxies.

That's the right workflow. The vrayproxy object saves the material ID's from the original model, so if you have a car that's a single poly or mesh with subobject material ID's then you can just create a vrayproxy from that, import it, and apply the same multi/sub-object material to the proxy.
