  • Affect reflections/Glossiness Problem

I use Max 2021 with Vray3.2 and unfortunately I found a very strange problem.
Under Max 2019 and Vray 3.2 I do not have this. Maybe it is a compilation error because it is not normal.

We always used "affect reflection" to remove the light source from the reflections. This works also with 2019 up to today.
Under 2021 the rendering is strongly influenced by glossiness. But wrong what you can see in the screenshot.

Now, if we don't want to see the light source in the reflections, we deactivate "Affect specular", but is that the way it should be? As I said, in 2019 I removed it with "Affect reflection".

    This should be fixed.

Let's get back to us so you understand my problem and don't write "Fix it in post production" (that was in a Maya post). Apparently some people found the problem in Maya too.
We have a render output of about 350K images per month. This since 7 years. We have 600 car paint mats and 1200 3D car models.
We can't change that in post production when we have to remove the light source from the rims in 20k jobs.

I respectfully ask for help with this problem.

    Hi darius_wojcik

You can refer to this post in regards to how are the options currently working. In the two examples you shared it appears that you are getting different results with Affect reflections turned off and glossiness value of 0.98, however, I am not able to reproduce this in max 2021 and 2019 with V-Ray 4.30.2 - I am getting matching results. Are you sure you have the exact same V-Ray versions installed?

And yes, as you suggested - currently, you will need to turn off Affect Specular to achieve what you desire.

If it is possible, I can send you the file. We have tested it with 3 employees. And everybody has the same problem. I think because we have installed the same versions too.

Well, from this screenshot it appears you're not using the same V-Ray versions, which is why you're having those differences. In 2019, you are using 2.0, however, since update 3.1, reflections work in a different way - as described in the linked post in my first reply to you.

But this does not explain this behavior. Or do you have an explanation why a reflection disappears or not when I change the glossiness by 0.01 when "Affect Reflections" is disabled?

You can also link me to the correct version which I download and install.
Why is "Affect Reflections" not removed completely if it behaves wrong?

I wouldn't say it behaves wrong, just different than before. This was done to improve physical accuracy and is thoroughly explained here as well. As you noted, it depends on the glossiness value of the material. Anything with clear reflections (i.e. glossy 1) will be controlled with Affect Reflections, else, Affect Specular should suffice. Specular layer currently contains all the reflections + specular from direct light sources.

You can find and download the latest V-Ray Next version here: https://download.chaosgroup.com/down...2019-43002-adv
