  • Denoise animation larger exr file size

    Hey,
Am using the Vdenoise.exe on a DWAB compression exr sequence.
Works great but the file size was 57mb,big, and denoised output is now 114mb, way too big.
It seems like the output frames have a different compression ....maybe, any ideas?

Also looking at the denoised files the multichannel exr still has the layers generated by the denoise element (defocusAmount, noiseLevel etc.)

I understand that they are needed in the original file to do the denoise as a post process but why output them again?
Can they be auto deleted for the output?

Have gone back to denoising the frame at render and out to split elements.

Multi-layer exr with denoise as a post process might be a cleaner solution but is not practical to use and file size is a problem.

In my case I am using Irmap to keep rendertime to a minimum.
That means if I change anything I have to re-do irmap, render frames, de-noise, re-output from compositor to remove unwanted elements and re-output with compression.
Then delete original rendered exr (not denoised), delete de-noise exr (too large)
    Way too many steps

Results are unexpected, no idea why it doubled the file size and makes no sense to output the elements for de-noising a second time.

Thanks for the report. It may be due to vdenoise.exe's compression method. I've logged an issue (internal bug-tracker id: VMAX-10507) for our developers to investigate.
Regarding the denoising channels, we do have a request for their removal after denoising (internal bug-tracker id: VMAYA-7879). I'll add your request as well.

We have been using the denoiser on a recent project and ran into the same issue. Would be great if the denoiser would let the user select the compression algorithm, and select which channels to save, or at least the ability to strip all but RGBA.

Also, from the GUI, the options to specify a frame range are rather dodgy. Much of the time they don’t seem to work properly. Perhaps it was because the sequence didn’t start at zero. Not sure.

          Thanks Aleksander.
Got a nice result denoising per frame but using the blending of the vdenoise.exe would be better with this fixes.

I also find the option to denoise render elements slightly confusing.
You can specify which elements to denoise in the elements themselves do I need to re-select which element when when I run Vdenoise.exe?
I want to run it as a post process through deadline.

pg1 If you wish to denoise specific elements through the vdenoise tool, you need to select them in the tool itself, yes. Use the -denoiseElements command when operating the tool through cmd (type -help if something is unclear or check the technical documentation).

Not sure if you can execute specific commands through Deadline, to be honest; Deadline's Vdenoise job submission does not seem to have such functionality, only basic options. Better to ask Deadline's staff.
