  • Upgrading from 3.6->5: slower render times?

I'm trying to put a case together to upgrade, so I got the vray 5 demo and installed it on Max 2021 (while 3.6 remains on 2019). Obviously we're getting all the extra features since 3.6, but I also thought we were getting better render times in certain situations.

Using a typical scene we do (exterior), I got a render time of 52 minutes in vray 5 vs, 40 minutes in vray 3.6. Are there any settings I should be changing?

I also tried GPU and GPU/CPU hybrid rendering, but unfortunately it still lacks support for several important maps like the non-native ColorCorrect and Bercon distortion and BerconTile mapping & randomization, and with default settings it wasn't any faster, although I haven't looked into what the setting translation is from regular VRay rendering to GPU so I may just have too higher settings.

The consensus is to leave V-Ray at all its defaults. Have you tried that?

Nah I just opened the scene up as it was (from 3.6).

Do not just look at the render time. Possibly the output from 5 is a lot cleaner for the given time.
