  • Banding issues with vray

    Hi,

I'm having problems with banding issues in vray.
The problem is most visible in a simple set up attached.
I've used an IES light pointing at a mid grey wall.
You can see banding issues on the wall.

Also attached are 2 renders saved out as a .exr 32bit and opened in aftereffects. Again the banding is an issue.

Do people know why the banding issues occur and how to remove them to create smooth gradients?

    Cheers,
    Antony

That is the (lower) limit of an 8-bit display.
If you color pick, you'll notice the values are continuous (i.e. V-Ray isn't banding at all.).
Another test you could try would be to brighten the image (2 stops or more) and see how the banding disappears, as the monitor range has a slightly easier time of it.

It cannot be "removed", nor it can be "smoothed".
What's done in situations like these, where the output doesn't quite match the range of the input, is to dither the values (i.e. introduce noise) so that the banding loses visibility.
Or, of course, put the image back into the displayable ranges, where at all possible (in your case, render it brighter.).
