  • Max 2020

So I'm trying to move from maya to max, using v 2020...is this a particularly buggy version? I'm experience so much lag, crashes, not responding..seems awful Clicking materials in slate, takes a second or two to open the attributes, render settings window takes about 5 secs to open, every time!! Im not sure i want to continue if its going to be like this

francomanko would it be possible to shed more light to the specific issues so we can troubleshoot?

In case you're having crashes and if they are project specific, best would be to forward the scenes through our contact form.

I Would recommend moving to 2021.3 ( if possible), it is stable and with more features.

MAX went South in 2017 and has slowly recovered to almost usable. The latest is okay, but I am still crashing many times a week. Why are you moving to MAX?

Most of Max's UI controls transitioned to QT, but they are internally translated from windows ones, and that translation exacts often a very heavy toll on systems (single-core action...).
This goes for most of max's ui and for all of ours, at the moment.
Further, the max relation to its viewports, and the way object properties and menus are built to be shown to users is very different to Maya's, and perhaps not as performant (in my production experience it was always the other way around, but it's been ten years now, and plenty has changed.).
You can rest assured though that movies still get made with Max, and tasks get accomplished.
Give it some time, you'll also find its pluses (do give a whirl at the available plugins, f.e.).

Last time i used max was before maya came out, so i'm not expecting an easy ride I will push on !! Get ready for some really tedious questions from me tho, all starting with 'in maya i could.....'

Well.. I have used max enough. That's not certainly normal.
Especially "render settings window takes about 5 secs to open" part.
VRay checks lic every time when you open the UI. So, it could be that.
If you want to isolate the issue, try to switch to other renderer and try same action.

Yes, any legacy UI would be slower than native Qt. Just compare Physical material UI vs Standard or VRayMtl.
But, even them, it should not be slower than Maya for sure.

And... noways the latest is the best. Try 2021.3.
