  • "Flocking" Look

I have a strange request. A client wants me to create animals with this "flocking style" applied to them. It's something I've never heard of or seen before. It looks like felt/small fur. Has anyone ever create this stuff before? If yes, what do you think would be a good approach. Seems like using short fur with a very dull hair standard VRayMat would work fine, but I figured I'd ask as there is always interesting ideas here.

    Thanks in advance!

Flocking is basically like magnetised metal shavings, so I'm not quite sure of the particular brief's suggestion if it's an animal...seems abit vague tbh.
Fur wouldn't really work, in my mind at least...displacement might...not sure exactly how though, depending on the closeness to the substance...

Definitely look into roughness / sheen in the material so you get a bit of a back scatter look to the material, then do a scatter of tiny hairs over the surface of the object with a similar and transparent material - I think bertrand benoit has done something similar to put dust on objects?

I'd like to know this as well. it's a very hard look to create if you're aiming for realism. I tried recreating this with Hair and Fur, Forest Pack, etc But it was extremely expensive to render for bigger surfaces (carpets). In the end I went for a simple 2D displacement with some FP 'hairs'. But it didn't look good at all imo.

You'd need a good vector displacement map in combination with some scattered hairs. The problem is creating or finding the displacement map.

I think the article joconnell was talking about was this: https://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/the-fabric-of-reality/

I think Geo Pattern can come in handy here ...

More likes on this post and - who knows - maybe one day VRay will have something like this:

VRay pattern can do mostly the same ..
check the pillow example I did few years back here :

btw Andrey Kozlov ( aka Karba ) is the one who originally developed both VRay and Fstorm Pattern .

Simply, I love to put pixels together! Sounds easy right : ))
