  • Vray displacement Modifier and viewport mesh.

    Hello,
I'd like to interact with Vray displacement modifier in the viewport, like default 3ds max "Displace". Is there a way to do it? Example I have mountains texture and I'd like to add edit poly on top of Vraydisplacement modifier.

Sorry to say, you cannot do that since the displacement is generated dynamically (prior to rendering). Subdividing the object and using 3ds Max's Displace should work though.

I wish there was a way to do this as well. Increasingly external programs like World Creator or the like are exporting textures only. If I want to populate it with trees or objects I can't do it easily with the displacement mod. Yes I can use the max displace modifier but it would require many turbosmooths and slicing around the border of the camera view so my polycount doesn't go haywire and so I can smooth to the proper amount. This in turn affects lighting quite a bit as environmental light bounce is changed and offscreen objects are now floating in the air and coming across as errors in reflections.

If the displacement mod had some kind of 'preview' button so we could place objects properly that would really be awesome. Especially if it had the ability to link objects to parts of it so as we adjust the displacement the objects follow the surface. Or, maybe somehow the displacement mod could see that there is a max displace under it and have an option to 'render the difference'. That would rock so hard because we could use the displace mod on a low subdivision level for tree scatter or object placement and maintain the age old workflows.

        Hi Deflam,
you can actually do that if you are using forest pack to scatter the trees. You just have to brows the effects presets and find the one called Follow Displace Surface (V-ray). This will help you plug in the displacement map inside forest and use it to drive the scatter taking into consideration the displacement added tot the surface.
