  • filtering maps

    Hi,
according to this article https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...usage-in-v-ray is not good idea to deacrese blur value in bitmap node (I usualy use 0,1), because it disable mipmapping. But how can I achieve detail then? I tryed any combination of interpolation/filterin in VrayBitmap but when blur is 1.0 its always ugly and without detail. And how this all incorporate with Filter image option in displacement setting?

As you can see in attachment blur_01.png is with blur set to 0.1 and in blur_10.png is on default 1.0 and is without any detail (its used as displacement map). My question is. How can I achieve detail without suppresing mipmapping.
All textures are loaded via VrayBitmap and they are mipmapped TX.

Higher resolution images is a method, though a raw one.

I know it's not reccomended but it makes things like fabric look so bad, we drop everything to .25 anyway. Everyone I know drops it.

I'm not sure how rendering higher res would fix it. The issue is that at glancing angles it kills all fine detail, which completely changes the look of bump and displacement maps.

How can this fix it? This images are regions from 1280p renders and the textures on models are all 4k. Imagine you have a lot of characters in one shot at start is camera close but end is far from characters. So you need details and also you need mipmapping to work to save memory. How you solve this? And also even on closeup when highest 4k mipmap is used the image is blury with blur at 1.0

Why is this parameter in VrayBitmap anyway?

As far as I can see, this seems to be related only to the displacement; I'm not actually seeing much of a difference in the other textures. It might be something that can be improved - do you think you can provide us with a sample scene?

            Best regards,
            Vlado

Yes its tru that I mostly test this with displacement. I wil send some testing scene to support@chaosgroup.com

I never said it's bad to lower it, i said it's bad to set it to 0 (or 0.01 in Max, which is equivalent).
... values lower than 1 will force higher resolutions to be loaded.
Lowering the parameter to 0.01 will to all intent and purposes load the highest resolution map, and not perform any filtering, which would be incredibly bad.
If deciding to change Blur value, be considerate, and test: different map resolutions, viewing conditions and most importantly perception will make the sweet spot vary from case to case, so don't be afraid of trying solo renders of the interested geometry to find it.
