  • Computer Issue! Can anyone Help?

I run a Dual Xeon 3.4 with 3 Gigs Ram and a Nvidia Quadro FX 2000

lately it seems to get bogged down on anything! Just to start Max seems to take 3 years to load... I have check all my settings, Virtual memory. I have ran defrags, and debugs , disk clean-up etc... and the dang thing runs like a pentium 3. it still processes faster than ever. But basic running programs seem to take forever. If you have any Ideas on what to try please let me know. I about to just reformat and start over with it....
    Thanks

How much clear HD space do you have? Is Windows set up to see enough of it? (paging file or whatever it's called these days)

Check out your temp file's and get rid of them .... see if you have any DUMP files .. that can get pretty large when blue screening... then defrag your drives... check your swap file sizes ..... FORMAT always works for me..

There are no virues on this bad boy, with our network and IT guru's I can't even get a jpg pass my e-mail...

I have check the page filing and it is 1 1/2 time the amout of my ram 4.5 Gig's.

I have a main drive 160GB Partioned to C: and D: which are each 25% fullI also Have that Back on a raid setup. Could my raid be slowing the computer down?

I have defraged, and disk cleaned ...no performance increase. I mean I can't find any larger than normal dmp files.
            Thanks

Try a bios reset. For any reason things might have got screwed up there.

                  Just a thought,
                  Michael

EDIT: Unplug your internet conection, remove any dhcp and gateway from your ipconfig and try again.

if your hard drive is on the way out:
check Device manager> IDE/atapi controllers > Primary IDE controller .. then properties>advanced settings and see if transfer mode is : Ultra DMA Mode 6
                    (or maybe a higher number?)

the mode drops back if a fault is found and it can get very slow

how to stop it falling back is another story

'course you may have a drive that doesnt even show this mode - I dont know if SATA drives are prone to this

check your process list and make sure nothing unusual is going on there. like programs with high cpu usage or high memory usage.
Watch the process list as you start up max. the cpu usage should generally fluctuate between say 5 and 40, but it will spend more time down low, and peek up more around the 40s when it actually opens max. Memory usage once its open should be between 140mb and say 200mb at the most.

FYI you can get the process list by press CTRL-ALT-DELETE, just on the off chance you didnt know. But you most likely do

                      Anyway, good luck.

I'd check your heatsinks, when those xeons get to hot they step down to crawl mode.

I would format the whole pc. All the time you already spent searching the problem, you could have formatted it already

I agree! Buy yourself a copy of Ghost. Wipe the sucker. Reinstall. Make a good image, then you can "reset" your machine every time it gets pokey.
