  • Thin-walled translucency blur possible?

Maybe I am over-thinking this but, on the subject of leaves, the new thin-walled option is good but it does not allow any blurring of the translucency to simulate what the actual volume SSS does.
Would it be a good idea, worthwhile, or in any way feasible to make the refraction blurriness work to allow this?

Could you provide a visual example of the desired effect? Do you wish to blur out the translucency effect similar to how the glossiness effect affects the refraction?

Yeah that's exactly it, simply blurring the effect, so if a true volume with translucency blurs any object on the other side, then that's the aim - to replicate that with this great thin-walled option.
I was playing with it for leaves and maybe it's overkill but it somehow seemed to me to be useful in that case and maybe other similar materials.
Looking at reference images, the only way I could approximate it was with the shadows, but that is hacky and means having a pretty large sun which can adversely affect other parts of any scene.

There isn't such a translucency option. It seems logical that softening the shadows (cast onto the translucent object) is the way to approach the case - you may do that by controlling the lights (i.e. softboxed lights that affect only the leaves). Adding slight refraction properties with a low amount of glossiness to the shader can produce an interesting effect as well.

Ah yeah, I know there isn't an 'option' for volume translucency; it's just that it naturally happens doesn't it? (mid-render so can't check).
Anyway, no problem if you reckon it's a bit overkill for maybe not many use-cases

Well, yes, it does happen naturally and depends on the lights' softness as already mentioned.

The green plane gets its color from the SSS, but it's thin-walled, and gets the blur from the refraction glossiness.
              It's also nested in a 2-sided material.
              What have i misunderstood?
