  • allways Vray exceptions

    On every project I work I get vray exceptions. I understand this is memory problem in most cases but I have 2GB memory on every machine and 3GB switch, and in task manager it never excedes 1.6 GB of memory and Max still crashes.

    this is my boot.ini file

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /fastdetect 3GB

    I have to finish project by tomorow and I use vray proxys on all my trees and hi polly models and it still crashes.
    Now I am rendering on my other machine and one wierd thing is happening.
    My three machines have finished calculating Ir map and now only one is rendering even they calculated irmap together.
    What is happening.

    Which VRay version? How large is your swap file? Have you checked your memory for errors and CPU temperature for overheating?

    Best regards,

      Vray 1.47.03
      virtual memory in performance settings is 4096. Thats swap file if I am correct.
      No memory error, tested with memtest.
      And I dont know about overheating becouse I dont know where to look, but I doubt in that becouse I have good cooling on my procesors and two vents for case cooling.

      I dont belive its overheating of processors becouse they work just fine in scenes under 1GB of memory.

        Ok then. What message do you get exactly when it crashes?

        Best regards,

          I may be wrong but I think you need a forward slash before the "3gb" in order for the switch to work.

          I.E. /fastdetect /3gb.

            You are indeed correct.

            That explains why kpavlov's render is crashing at the 1.6gb mark.

              I will change that. I have tryed to find that ultimat 3Gb switch thread but link is broken since new web site came.

              By the way I have one dual opteron 246 and two dual amd mp 2800+ and one dual amd mp 1800+ but on the last one I cant use 3gb switch becouse windows cant load in that case.

              The hardware is not the problem becouse I use to have 3gb switch before on that machine " without /3Gb "
              Maybe something I installed, but how can I find what, and dont tell me to reinstall my windows becouse I have zilion things there that I need and dont need.

                If you contact Microsoft and tell them you need the /3GB switch. They have some fixes.

                  By the way I have changed boot.ini to /3Gb and I didnt get exception but its early to say with just one rendering.

                  Other thing that is happening is that I see only two buckets now and not six of them becouse of three dual machines while its rendering.
                  During IRmap calculation I had six buckets.

                  I had similar situations before when I had to wait for other machines to join rendering and sometimes half of the rendering was finished while that happend, but now half an hour passed and still no other buckets.

                  Why is that happening.

                    Hey,

                    Rerender I contacted Microsoft and they told me that I don't need to use the 3GB switch because that is enabled in Win XP Pro! Find this hard to believe and I would rather trust everyone on the forums as apposed to Microsoft. Just thought I would mention this.

                      I doubt that the 3GB switch is enabled by default, if so then it must have been with service pack2... We had to use the switch on all of our XP pro machines, without they all crash at 1.47GB on 3dsmax.exe, with the switch at 2.4 - 2.8 GB. As far as I remember you can even write simply 3GB behind fastdetect, without any slash, and it will work anyway. Regards, Michael

                        Actually I have tryed memtest again and one machine has some memory problems. I will change memory tomorow and try again.
