  • normal maps are yellow in Vraybitmap node

    Hi.

I've attached a screen grab to help explain my issue. When i load up a normal map texture using the standard 3DS max bitmap node everythign is fine...that purpley blue colour. When i load the same texture but into a Vray Bitmap it's all yellowish. Does anyone know what i'm getting wrong here?

    Thanks,
    Andy

    set RGB primaries to "Default".

Eh, that's weird, as I always set them to raw and they work fine. I thought it was in the docs to use raw for normals also. Very strange....
Or maybe it only happens with a specifically generated normal map, like either DX or the OpenGL one?

I haven't tried FP images, which ought to indeed be raw vector data.
There is a chance the normal map may have been sRGB encoded (particularly at low precision, like an 8bit int), and thus look wrong when treated as raw.
If you could send me the image (or a crop thereof) for investigation (via email) i'd be grateful.

          Thanks...never noticed that primaries button!!!
I created another node and added the normal map in again and it worked this time... although I did notice that the normal map looked a little darker than usual, so i changed the 'Colour space transfer function' to 'inverse gamme = 1' and it looks exactly like it was supposed to

So I have no idea what i'd done to make it yellow the first time but eitherway your responses have helped me learn something new!!!

          Thanks,
          Andy
