    Ok... ticking me off now...

    I did a test render of a dome on a simple scene - no problem.
    Opened up a current project that has long render times, turned off the direct I was using, and added a vray light dome with a mult of 1. The dropped IR settings way down, left first bounce (IR) at 1.0, and dropped second bounce (LC) to 0.2. Hit render and watched it say "Updating instances (xxxxx)...." over and over until it crashed. Tried again and same thing. Any thoughts?

      Yeah... I realize by saying what I said, I sound little like an a**. Sorry, Instinct, I just wanted to make a point about all this and mostly conceptually. People (not you) have wrongfully claimed that Ambient Occlusion is GI. We all know that that is not true. In the same way, people have also claimed certain dirt shaders to be AO shaders. Ambient Occlusion is actually very straight forward and can be done a number of ways INLCUDING light domes. Now, since then people have gotten fancy with raytracing and created much cleaner and nicer AO shaders. But basically most of these are QMC type raytracing calls sending out a bunch of rays, the precentage of which rays are occluded defines how much the shader darkens, yada yada yada. Now based on that concept, you can create a specialty shader which is pretty cool, you can control the angle (other then a hemispheric dome of 180), you can control how far that ray search, etc... that is great. This type of shader is the one you are talking about for the Benz commercial. Very cool and very useful. But by doing that you are no longer doing what is defined as Ambient Occlusion. You are using the QMC method of doing AO to do what is better knows as a dirt shader. On the other hand, keep in mind that the old style dirt shaders were a lot more simplistic in the old days that mostly based on angles of normals. Nonetheless, Mentalrays Dirt shader is basically what you are calling an AO shader.

      CCS... sorry... that is a hard one without more information on your scene. Souncds like something is making your memory spike. What is your LC settings?

        Yeap... Dirt shaders are cool, and powerful raytracers liek MR and Vray can do them very well.

          Thing that's strange is it renders fine with direct light, albeit looong. Was hoping the light dome might speed things up.

          Settings (from memory) are:
          1st= IR @ 1.0
          2nd= LC @ 0.2
          IR= -5 / -3 / 5 / 8
          LC= 300 / 0.03
          Sun is a direct light at 0.7

          Any ideas? (or need other info?)

            I'm using a series of dome lights right now in an animation I'm doing. I've not used the dome light at all until this, but I like it because you can create some cool effects with it. Render times are high though, and somewhat grainy too. So its a good thing that grainy is the new smooth.

              Yeah it seems odd... we would have to take a look at your scene... maybe vlado could help you here

                  @cpnichols :

                  I didnt mean to say you´re sounding like an a** or anything hehehe This is just pretty much of interest to me as still got to learn a lot and love tech discussions to clear things up that were/are unclear to me (even tho i often dont know they are unclear to me :P). Thanks for pointing all that out as it will make live easier (esp for the forum ppl getting ranted by me for confusing GI and AO/DM, as i got a better explanation now )

                  Greetings,
                  Thorsten

                  (P.S. Did you ever realise that Dirtmap and Deathmatch got the same abbreviation ? Now that´s something i need to look in and write a Paper :P)

                        hehehe all you would need is a good dictionary but the best thesis is the concept that with all the words in the dictionary under the section F why is there only one thats called the F word (i wont mention it here but we all know which it is hehehe)
