  • PNG transparency material setup

    Hi all,
With PNGs becoming more and more used around and me using the old school separate alpha mask, I am working on a project where hundreds of materials coming in as fbx have png textures assigned.
What is the proper setup for a vray material using a png in the transparency slot (or not if it is possible, is there an option in the diffuse material?).
I did a search here and could not find the proper answer.

    Thanks in advance,

    David

If I understood correctly, you wish to use PNG files (which can hold transparency information) in the VRayMtls' opacity maps. This is not an issue, however, note that the transparency in V-Ray works by evaluating the texture's color values (where black means fully transparent and white fully opaque). When using it as i.e. Diffuse, you can use the built-in transparency of the PNGs through the VRayBitmap node's "Alpha source", where "Image alpha" will apply the effect. In the case of opacity maps, note that the texture's transparent parts are read as white (actually black would make more sense).

Hi Aleksandar, thanks a lot for the quick response. Your technique works as long as it is known that you have to use "MONO OUTPUT" as alpha.
      Wish list:
A checkbox that just says "PNG ALPHA" in the basic settings of the material would be great.
      Thanks again,
      David
