  • ACES CG with OCIO vs Melanin and dye on Hair

    Hi everyone,
I asked myself If the hardcoded Melanin Values work together with Aces CG Profiles?
Basically, my question is if I need to change something to my workflow wheras I just choose a Melanin Value and use it as it is. /Using an AcesCg profle in the framebuffer. Inputting all Color textures through OCIO nodes.
Similar question on the Dye Color, Should I use a VrayColor + OCIO node with the Profile there?

The Melanin parameter in the Hair Material does respect ACEScg colorspace, the user doesn't have control over this so it needs to be native to the renderer
You should be able to tell if this doesn't work(you will get very saturated results and the material will not be usable with ACES workflow) , I tested this and I know that it works correctly, let me know if it doesn't

Some artists prefer to work this way and some prefer using the internal ACEScg values, there is no right/wrong here
The problem in 3Ds Max is that the color picker doesn't expose the internal ACEScg values like Maya/Houdini/Modo, it might be wise to use a VrayColor + OCIO for this (doesn't work on GPU for now)

If you have the time I recommend reading the part on color picking in this thread, it will explain the concept to you

Hi Muhammed, thanks for the reply and the link. I guess that is what threw me off, the last studio I worked for had a kind of internal Aces CG Color Picker in 3dSmax which I got used to. Now I try to "match" dye colors and struggle to do so. For now I've put the OCIO node with the Aces lut between the VrayColor and the Dye.

We are aware of that and looking into it. The default color picker in 3Ds max is not great if you use ACES system

This should be helpful for now, make sure Vray Color RGB primaries is set to sRGB/None and you should use utility Linear sRGB in your OCIO node.
