still wrestling with caustics in vray..

    an incredibly simple scene..

generating a caustic solution for a rounded plastic moulding (basically a box) with a vray sphere light behind, 20,000 photon samples, inside an inverted sphere as environment. , for rendering as a spherical panorama and mapping back onto the light as a projector map, for some cheap headlamp effects.

really is this as good as it gets? 2-3hrs to calculate a grainy photon mapped solution on a 64 core overclocked pc, saved resulting 50gb photon map...

rendering "from file" i have to wait half an hour+ for it to slowly load into ram (or whatever its doing when it says "preparing global light manager" ) this is from a pcie4 raid 0 array that does 10GB/sec.

switching to the "killer new caustics" system, i get way slower results, still poorly resolved after 10+hours, and only using half my cpu, if that. no option to save out result either.

im re-watching videos of the corona caustics system, introduced in 2019, and it seems infinitely faster... like, near immediate results, in IPR too.

    what gives?

i might have to ask a corona trial just to render out the caustics.

Without the scene setup being known, there isn't a whole lot that can be inferred, besides your irritation.
